Who Can Use This Service?

This service is limited to William and Mary faculty, emeritus faculty, staff, and students. Books, periodical articles, and other materials that are not owned by College of William and Mary libraries may be requested from other libraries through interlibrary loan (ILL).  Before placing a request always check our online catalog to be sure an item is not available at William and Mary. Items listed in the catalog as being searched, missing, checked out or overdue may be requested on ILL.  Please note that the VIMS and Marshall-Wythe School of Law Libraries provide interlibrary loan service to their own faculty and students.

How Long Does It Take?

The length of time involved in obtaining a loan or photocopy can vary considerably. 52% of article requests are received and delivered electronically in 2 days or less. 54% of all book requests arrive in 5 days or less.

Unless a request indicates a date after which the item is no longer needed, ILL will attempt to obtain the materials until otherwise informed. Researchers should cancel ILL requests for material no longer needed.

How Many Requests Can I Make?

William and Mary faculty, students, and staff are currently not limited in the number of requests per week they may submit. The ILL office reserves the right to establish priorities of service in instances where the number of requests received from a single patron might adversely affect the service offered to others.

How Much Does It Cost?

The ILL services provided by Swem Library are generally available free of charge to William and Mary faculty, staff, and students.

Where Do I Pick Up and Return Materials?

Depending on the preferred ILLiad delivery method you selected, articles may be posted to the Web, mailed directly to you or held for pick up at the Circulation Desk. All other materials received via ILL must be picked up at the Circulation Desk.

Only you or your ILLiad designated authorized user(s) will be allowed to pick up materials. A campus ID is required at the time of pick up.

All returnable ILL materials should be returned to the Circulation Desk.

How Long Can I Keep an Item?

The lending library determines the loan period and renewal policy for its materials. Borrowers (including faculty) can expect to keep most materials for two to four weeks. Please note that many Virginia libraries grant us extended loan periods of six to eight weeks but DO NOT ALLOW RENEWALS for their materials.

Renewals of ILL materials should be requested only in exceptional cases. If a renewal is needed, the ILL Office should be notified AT LEAST FOUR DAYS BEFORE THE DUE DATE. ILL must contact the lending library for permission to renew. Only one renewal per item can be requested.

All ILL materials are due promptly upon the due date. A borrower's failure to comply with the conditions of a loan could jeopardize his or her interlibrary loan privileges and/or those of Swem Library with lending institutions.
