About the Program

Swem Library is currently circulating ten 80GB Video iPods to current William and Mary students, faculty, and staff.  Each iPod comes in a protective case with a belt clip, a charger and cable, and a pair of earbuds.  Additional iPod accessories are also available for checkout. This iPod program is possible through generous funding by Verizon. The program is managed and run by e-SWAT, Swem's team of student technical help assistants who work in the library during nights and weekends.  Please contact e-SWAT for help, questions, or problems related to the project.

iPod equipment is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Check current availability of iPod equipment.

To check out an iPod at the Circulation Desk eligible patrons must:

  • Sign an acknowledgement of responsibility.

Please review our Policies and Procedures.

What's on a Swem iPod?

Each Swem iPod is preloaded with a collection of audio and video content created and contributed by the W&M community including music, film, lectures and library instruction. To add to our collection please see Contibuting Content.

Patrons should feel free to download additional music, videos, and podcasts from their own collections or other sources that offer iPod content (e.g., iTunes Store). If you are new to iTunes see our helpful iTunes and iPod Basics

Audiobook and Video Downloads

During the loan period, borrowers may ask e-SWAT to download one Audible audiobook and one iTunes Store movie or TV show subject to availability and funding. To comply with copyright requirements, a given title may be circulated on only one iPod at a time.

Patrons may search Audible (login with username and password "swem") and the iTunes Stores for new items to request for the collection. e-SWAT will manage all audiobook and video downloads. Patrons must bring their Swem iPods (and given accessories) to e-SWAT during e-SWAT hours. For semester and summer breaks when e-SWAT does not have regular desk hours, please e-mail e-swat@wm.edu to arrange a download appointment.

Check what audiobooks, movies, and TV series are currently checked in/out.

View iPod audiobooks and iTunes video content in the Swem catalog.

Optional Accessories

The following iPod accessories are also available for checkout at the Circulation Desk:

iPod / iTunes Basics

Beware that when adding content, iTunes wil erase all content already on the iPod if you select "Erase and sync"  instead of "Cancel" the first time you plug the iPod into your computer.   When an iPod is returned to Swem, it will be entirely erased and the library content will be restored.

Apple provides iPod manuals that describe iPod basics, features, and important information regarding safety and handling. Additional help can be provided by iTunes documentation and e-SWAT.
