What is Swem Off-Site Stacks (SOSS)?

Swem Library's Off-Site Stacks (SOSS) is a storage facility that houses approximately 200,000 lesser-used materials and items requiring special environmental protection in a permanent, climate-controlled facility. 


Requesting Off-Site Stacks Items

Requesting Off-Site Materials:  Off-Site materials appear in Swem Library's online catalog, with OFFSITE as the owning "library."   To request that these items be brought to Swem Library for your use:

  • STEP 1:  go to Swem Library's catalog, look up the item, and display the full record for that item
  • STEP 2:  if the Holdings information is Off-Site Stacks Facility:  
  • click Find and Request
  • then click Swem Off-Site Storage

Off-Site requests can also be made in person at Swem Library's Circulation Desk.    



Request & Delivery Schedule: Swem Library Offsite materials are retrieved and delivered to Swem on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

 

Notification:  Swem Library staff will notify you by email or telephone when your Off-Site item is available at Swem Library. Pick up location is Swem Library's Circulation Desk. Materials will be held for 10 days.

Off-Site Stacks Details

The Off-Site collection includes selected journals that are at least twenty years old, journal volumes covered by full-text electronic databases, superseded reference materials, and older books from the general collection, including all of those with a Dewey Decimal classification.  

Selected materials from Swem Library's Special Collections, Reference, and Government Information Departments are also located at Off-Site.

The Off-Site Stacks are located behind the College of William & Mary's Dillard campus buildings on Ironbound Road and are accessible only to library staff.
