Finding Books: basic searching

Go to Swem Library's home page (swem.wm.edu).
Click on Library Catalog.
Type in keywords:

Examples:
- 'public health' and aging
- 'public health' and (aging or aged or elderly or senior$)
Leave the Search Type as keyword.
Click the Search Everything or Subject button.

SEARCH TIPS:

Combine two different concepts with and.

Combine two similar concepts with or.

In LION, use single quotation marks around phrases.

Look at the subject headings assigned to books on your topic; use those subject heading terms to expand your search for more materials.

Finding Journal Articles: basic searching

Go to Swem Library's home page (swem.wm.edu).
Click on Databases.
In the list of Categories, choose SOCIOLOGY.
Click on Sociological Abstracts.
Enter your keywords, using same search tips as above.
From the list of articles that appears, choose ones that look useful.
Check to see if Swem Library owns those journal issues:
- Go to the Library Catalog.
- Type in the journal's name (e.g., Third World Quarterly).
- For Search Type, click on Begins with.
- Click on the Periodical Title button.
If the title appears in the list, click on it. If there's more than one entry for the journal title, click on the View button for the one owned by Swem Library. Then scroll to see which issues Swem Library owns. Note whether the issue you need is in the stacks, on microfilm, online, etc. Ask library staff for assistance in locating the issue in the library.
If Swem Library doesn't own the journal, ask at the Reference Desk about how to obtain a copy of the journal article through interlibrary loan.
Rrepeat the first steps above with other databases, such as InfoTrac OneFile and JSTOR.
