Census 2000

• American Fact Finder
  Offers population and housing information for states and communities which can be arranged into quick or detailed tables, and used as the basis for drawing thematic maps.  Main location for Census 2000 data from the Census Bureau.
• Census 2000 Briefs and Special Reports
  Short treatments of a variety of population or housing topics based on the 2000 Census. Examples: Population Change and Distribution 1990-2000 and Gender 2000. From the Census Bureau.
• Census 2000 Congressional Apportionment Data

• Census 2000 Special Tables and Reports

• Census 2000 Supplementary Survey
  Reports for the nation and individual states on social, economic and housing characteristics.  Consists of 107 tables of data on income, poverty, education, labor force status, ancestry, disability and other topics.  Represents effort by Census to produce accurate long-form type data from a sample of 1,203 counties.  Similar data will be released in the fall for cities and counties with 250,000+ population.

• National Historical Geographic Information System (NHGIS)

• Measuring America: The Decennial Censuses from 1790 to 2000

• Historical Census Statistics on the Foreign-Born Population of the United States, 1850-1990
  Offers data on characteristics of the foreign-born population of the U.S., such as age, sex, race, length of residence in country, citizenship status, and language spoken at home.  Period of coverage differs by characteristic.  Most data on national basis, some on state and metro-area basis.

  Annual report from the Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics.  Includes  indicators of  children's well-being in the areas of family characteristics, economic security, education, health, and social environment compiled by 20 federal agencies.  
• Black Population in the United States
  Reports on the income, educational and other characteristics of the Black population from the annual March Current Population Surveys conducted by the Census Bureau.
• Foreign-Born Population

• GenderStats

• How to Research the 1930 Census Microfilm
  Offers instructions on how to do Soundex and Geographic searches for family information on the latest personal name census available. The 1930 Virginia Census microfilm rolls are available for viewing at Swem Library.  Soundex indexes were  completed as a WPA project during the Depression era for 12 southern states, including Virginia.  Swem was unable to purchase the Virginia Soundex rolls due to their high cost and the library's tight budget.
• American Family Immigration History Center
  Database of names of immigrants from 1892 to 1924 who came through Ellis Island and the port of New York.  Also contains ship images and manifests.  Free registration required to search the site.   Sponsored by private organizations.
