Swem Library is a depostory library for U.S. and Virginia government information. As a Selective Depository in the Federal Depository Library Program, Swem Library selects approximately 55% of federal publication items. As a Virginia depository library, Swem receives all tangible documents distributed by the Library of Virginia for the state government.
Swem Library also collects United Nations and British Parliamentary documents in microfiche format.
U.S. federal documents are shelved according to the Superintendent of Documents Classification System on the east wing of the main floor. Also in this shelving area are Virginia documents, arranged by the VADOCS call number system, print based UN and Briitsh documents, oversize government documents, U.S. Census volumes, and a small Government Documents Reference area. Microfilm and microfiche format government documents are housed in cabinets just to the east of the stacks.
