Civil War Maps
There are a number of both printed and manuscript maps in the Manuscripts and Rare Books Department that concern the Civil War period. They are accessible through a card index which breaks down the holdings by country, state, locality and title of map (for those maps with titles). Where known, date and cartographer are indicated. There is also a subject section in the map drawers for the Civil War. Because of their size and fragility these maps cannot be photocopied.
Also in Special Collections is the photographic version of the Gilmer maps done by Confederate engineers which duplicates originals held by the Virginia Historical Society. These maps are invaluable not only for Civil War research but also because they are the most detailed maps ever done of many areas of Virginia in the mid-nineteenth century. Many of them even include residences.
Anyone needing Civil War maps should first consult the Atlas to Accompany the Official Records in the Reference Department on the first floor of Swem Library. A full citation to it is in the printed book section of this guide.
